Installation Process for Water Heaters

12/21/2016

A typical water heater installation is a straightforward process, but one where it is recommended that you use the best plumbers Lafayette CA residents trust to do the work. While there are different sizes and types of water heaters, the installation process is essentially the same save for electrical and gas systems.

If your water heater is a gas version, then you will need to shut off the gas at the valve before removing the old heater. For electrical versions, you will need to disconnect them as instructed in the manual for the water heater. Installing the water heater yourself is an option if you follow the instructions and are comfortable with the removal and installation process.

Removing the Old Water Heater

First, you will need to drain the old tank to make sure that it is empty. Then disconnect the gas line and the gas exhaust from the flue hat. Also, disconnect the water lines that run to and from the water heater. You can now remove the old unit, setting it aside until the new one is in place.

Installing the New Water Heater

Now that the old heater is out of the way, you can install the new one in its place. Simply set it inside the area where the old water heater stood. Now, install the heat trap fittings and water line connections and make sure they are watertight. Once you have accomplished that task, you are ready to connect the gas line. You'll need to test the gas line for leaks to ensure that it doesn't present an issue once the gas is turned back on.

The easiest way to test the line is by applying a sponge that has a mix of water and dishwashing liquid. Turn on the gas briefly and look for bubbles around the connection. If you see bubbles, that is the gas escaping, so turn the gas off and retighten the connection until no gas is escaping.

Now, you are ready to light the pilot and turn the control knob to the on position. You may need to remove the burner access panel, then turn on the control knob to the pilot position and hold a lit match over the opening until the pilot is lit. 60 seconds after the pilot lights, press and hold down the reset button on the control box.

Now, turn the knob on top of the control box to the on position and you will hear the burner ignite. If it does not ignite, repeat the process of lighting the pilot. Once the burner has been activated, you'll want to set the water heater temperature control to 120 degrees, give or take a few degrees as recommended. Remember that it will take a little time for the water inside to heat up, so be patient.

You can perform a water heater installation yourself, but it is recommended that you use the plumbers Lafayette CA residents trust to do this task. By hiring the best, you can ensure that they will do a proper installation so that you have a properly working water heater.
